Sub-Saharan Africa is home to half of the world’s poorest people. Extreme poverty continues to rise, affecting 41.1% of the population. A tragedy! Over 413 million Africans live on less than $1.90 per day and cannot meet their basic needs:
Eau Z’Enfants launched the "A Better Life" project with the goal of providing orphanages and underprivileged families in Guinea and Togo with the essential resources and equipment to improve their living conditions.
To achieve this, we choose to intervene in both the health and environmental sectors. Our projects focus on concrete actions aimed at improving daily life, including the distribution of food, the rehabilitation of orphanages, the distribution of school kits or toys, etc.
In 2019, the UN estimated that of the 257 million people suffering from hunger in Africa, 237 million live in Sub-Saharan Africa and 20 million in North Africa.
It is hard to truly grasp how critical hunger is, an emergency that directly threatens the lives of millions of people. To alleviate this need, we organize meal distributions and provide food supplies that respect local production cycles. We double our efforts during times of rising food prices or shortages of essential goods to ease the monthly budgets of orphanages and families.
In Togo and Guinea, many orphanages with capacities ranging from 30 to 100 children are housed in totally dilapidated facilities. Without resources or any government assistance, the orphanage managers have no means to improve their establishments or ensure the cleanliness of the premises.
Concerned about the welfare of the children, we have partnered with orphanages to equip them with new beds, mattresses, washing machines, study rooms, libraries, playrooms, computers, and more. Additionally, to prevent evictions, we also contribute to paying rent and covering the orphanages' regular bills.
The healthcare system in many African countries faces significant challenges, and the situation is often dire. According to the WHO, Guinea has only 3 hospital beds for every 6,000 inhabitants. Africa suffers from an unevenly distributed healthcare system, and medical services as well as medicines are scarce and expensive.
Eau Z’Enfants provides vital medicines and equipment to several health centers located in rural areas, including medical beds, medications, medical equipment, wheelchairs, and more. With the help of our partner French doctors, we organize training sessions for local medical staff. Our goal is to reduce infant mortality rates and high-risk childbirths. We also aim to improve the living conditions of disabled children.
In Guinea, access to electricity remains limited: out of 13 million inhabitants, only 2 million benefit from this essential service. Even in the capital city, electricity is not guaranteed 7 days a week in many neighborhoods.
In response to this reality—and mindful of the global climate crisis—our association equips orphanages and schools with solar panels to provide reliable access to electricity. By harnessing solar energy, a renewable and abundant resource, we offer a sustainable and consistent energy solution.
Electricity powers essential appliances such as refrigerators, lighting, and water heaters. This initiative fights energy poverty while also promoting an environmentally friendly approach to improving access to electricity.
At the start of every school year, we provide school kits to all children to ensure they begin their education in the best possible conditions.
We place special emphasis on festive seasons and step up our efforts to brighten the lives of children by offering them gifts and organizing large celebratory meals in the orphanages and villages we support.
Our goal is to meet the essential needs of children and contribute to their well-being. That’s why we regularly organize donation drives to collect clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, toys, basic medicines, bath towels, bedsheets, hygiene kits, and more. These items are then shipped in containers by freight.
